THIS GIVEAWAY NOW BE ENDED!
Best Pirateer, Roll Dem Bones and Loot Chest prizes have been awarded.
Fair winds to yer sails and smooth seas to ye Mateys!

Congratulations KillingMoon, voted Best Pirateer by participants of the thread!

Pirate Tavern Ambience

Ahoy Mateys! It be that time again to hoist the colors and call a gatherin' of the GrOG Brethren to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day (September 19th). So come raise a grog to the memory of the late Cap'n B by sharing a sea shanty, pulling our peg-legs with pirate jokes and telling us a tall sea tale or two! Glory, daring-do and treasure await ye! We be settin' the port to partyin', drinkin' the rum-runners dry, and tellin' such tales that even Davy Jones be seasick with envy! Roll them bones and cast yer lot fer a share o' the booty. And fer those hearty souls who crave greater treasure and adventure - sharpen yer cutlasses, polish yer hooks and sign up to set sail with the Cursed Crew to confront a befouled fate in a forum Role-Play by post game take-off of Doc's 2019 forum dungeon game! But beware, Mateys, for this year Commodore Beckett has sent spies among ye, and be proceeding at speed towards the port with his DRM fleet! Most o' the Cursed Crew be currently stranded in port with ye. Should Beckett's men question ye, will ye help the Cursed Crew evade them, or will ye aide the foul DRM forces and seek to hinder or challenge the Crew?

The 2023 Talk Like A Pirate Day GA saw the launch of the Voyage of the Cursed Crew, a D&D style play-by-post forum Role-Play game. Our adventurous Crew set out with Admiral Polly to search for the foul Kraken that took Cap'n B, only to find themselves under a Sea Hag's Curse (by a bilge-bottom Aboleth's whim) of being enslaved to alternate fates of death and servitude unless they can complete their Voyage and free themselves. Now pursued by Commodore Beckett and the DRM fleet and having just escaped a return to Doc's dangerous dungeon with new loot, our Crew seeks a way to reunite with the Ship and complete their fateful Voyage this coming year. So if any of ye with an adventurous spirit would like to join the game, this be yer last chance. There be only 2-3 spots open for new Crew!

HISTORY OF THIS GIVEAWAY: This GA is in memory of B, the B in bjgamer (I'm J, his widow). We both loved doing 'Just for Fun' giveaways here in the GOG forum. In 2018 B came up with a pirate themed GA for International Talk Like A Pirate Day. He adopted a pirate penguin persona and brought it back again for a Pirate Day GA sequel in 2019. In late 2019 B jokingly invited Doc0075 to use him/us as minions, and humorously Doc did just that - using B's pirate penguin as a boss minion in his Enter My Dungeon GA. Little did we know that would be the last time for Cap'n BJGamer to appear. Mere days before launching the 2020 Pirate Day GA, Cap'n B passed away. In 2023, in honor of the memory of Cap'n B, I reintroduced the Talk Like A Pirate Day Giveaway including a Pirate Tall Tale contest and a forum D&D play-by-post RP game offshoot of Doc's 2019 Northern tunnel adventure (by Doc's gracious permission), which should conclude with this next year.

For fun, pick a pirate name and write a pirate themed story, poem, tall tale, song or a couple pirate or sailor jokes, preferably about your character. Ye can give us a bit of backstory ... has yer scurvy scoundrel stolen great treasure, swilled a sea of grog, swooned the local beauties or escaped (or not) the hangman's noose? Just add in a bit of Pirate talk with an Ahoy, Arrr or Yarr and it qualifies. ;) You may edit your entry, but only entries posted or edited before 6:59AM UTC, September 23, 2025 will be eligible. You may also participate in the "Roll Dem Bones" dice roll for the up to $15 USD GOG game of your choice if you bold highlight "For the Crew!" or "For Beckett!" in your entry. 2) "In fer Best Pirateer."
Ahoy Mateys! I be (make up your pirate or sailor name).
Raise a Grog to Talk Like A Pirate Day (or Cap'n B) and here be my tale, Arrr. (tell a story, poem, song or a couple pirate or sea jokes) You may also post in bold whether ye be "For the Crew!" or "For Beckett!" if ye'd like to be included in the dice rolls for the $15 GOG game of your choice, but you may win only 1 game from Best Pirateer, the Loot Chest or the Roll Dem Bones dice roll.
The Loot I be after - (list up to 8 games from the Loot Chest list in the order you prefer.)"

THE LOOT CHEST LIST be posted below. Arrr!

Please post if you are "Nay In" or "In fer ..." TY.

TLDR: Make up a pirate-like or sailor character, tell us their story or a tall sea-tale and list up to 8 game prizes from those offered before 23 September to be entered to win a single game of your choice up to $25 USD or one of the games you listed. Put in if you'd like to be on the side of our fine brethren Crew "For the Crew", or help out slimy Beckett and the DRM fleet against the Crew "For Beckett" and I'll also enter you in a roll of the dice for $15 USD towards a game of your choice as an alternate prize. [Rules apply.]

Ye may also select a 'normal' weapon from: cutlass, saber, rapier, dagger, musket, crossbow, cudgel or axe; or one based on your character's background (again discussed with GM). Arrr, I raise a toast of grog to the legendary Pirate Penguin - B!
Skål!
In fer Best Pirateer

Ahoy Mateys! Do ye want to 'earrr another Long Joe tale?

DRAMATIS PERSONÆ:
LONG JOE, gentleman o' fortune & sea cook
PARROT, friendess to Long Joe
MARINER, unspeakable laddy

Scene: At a tavern: a tempestuous noise of drinking and snoring heard.
Enter Sandman and a Mariner

Joe. Ahoy, Matey!
Parr. Anchor your arse!
Joe. Be sit with us an' raise a grog to Cap'n B!
Parr. Arrr!
Joe. Ye be a gallant laddy, I spy. From the Seas? True Sea Dog, I mean.
Parr. Order more grog. Order!
Joe. An' one more pitcher at once. Thanks! Me Heartie… I salute ye with this here fine bumboo...
Parr. Down the 'atch! Arrgh!
Joe. Don't be shy, seaman. Pour more fer everyone...
Parr. Gimme grog!
Joe. I spy 'ow ye look at us. No need to blush. She be a real beauty, just look at this here deck cargo goodies...
Parr. Boor!!! Blow yer gun self!
Joe. Well, well, calm down!
Parr. Sling your hook! Out an’ far!
Joe. Shrew! Behave yerself in front of the gentleman o' fortune. Bend yer beak.
Parr. Aye, Aye! ‘ll crush ye barnacles!
Joe. Me throat be dry from stupid quarrels... Thanks, lad! What was I sayin’...?
Parr. Yarr! Talk bilge all time.
Joe. Ye can safely admit that there such a tall an' strong lad needs a fancy wench flutterin' on his shoulder. Don't blush, just blossom after grog. Gosh! There’re plenty of dead bottles here. Call for reinforcements! Thanks a lot…
Parr. Gar!!! Grog.
Joe. But... to be beautiful, a lass needs to dress up. To be cheerful, she needs to eat well. To be nice, she should drink even better.
Parr. Pour! Pour!
Joe. An' she be more eager fer love, if she first feels the warm touch o' gold.
Parr. Pshaw! Better buy Long Johns fer cold nights!
Joe. You've already gone on account with Sea Dogs, I suppose? But sharin' out booty isn't too big gaine fer the novice, I know. Don't be sad. Let's have…
Parr. A grog!
Joe. Avast! There be a rumors about Cap'n Flint treasure. At first I did nay believe it meself, because it be not the strangest somethin' sailors say after drinkin' at taverns. But… One day, while on an expedition with the Cap'n... let's set sail 'is infamous name aside... I was keeping company with an English nobleman who had been held for ransom. We played cards. Lady Luck smiled upon me and I had already won everything from him when he ripped open the secret pocket in his jacket and threw a map on the table with an X on the island, signed with a capital F. Suddenly...
Parr. Cap'n stepped on yer deck!
Joe. He trampled all the cards, took the map, sent the nobleman below deck, and arranged for me a meeting with The Cat o' Nine Tails. When I came to my senses, I heard from the sailor who was guarding me that the next day I'll walk the plank on my peg leg.
Parr. My beak is dry...!
Joe. But that there same night, we was arrested by an English frigate. Most o' the gentlemen o' fortune was killed in the fightin'. The English nobleman with whom I played cards interceded on my behalf. I was even allowed... Phew! ...to join the new crew of our captured ship. However, the Cap'n was killed in fight. The treasure map was not found on him, in his cabin, or anywhere on the ship.
Parr. Dead men tell no tales!
Joe. Yeay. But with my new work I was lucky again... I've found captain’s log...
Parr. Down the ship potty!
Joe. And inside it, a map of Flint was hidden. Alas, very soaked and brown as Captain's last pants.
Parr. Trrrreasure sank in dark Jones’ Locker!
Joe. Ahoy, Matey! Don't get up so suddenly. Why 'ave you turned so pale? It's everything ok?
Parr. Lend him a helping hook!
Joe. Too late. He's down under the table. He's lying and snoring. Come on, let's be gone, ye filthy dog o' 'ere, Polly!
Parr. Molly! You stupid moron!
Joe. We're going home. To yer aunt.
Parr. Joe! You took her without asking again!

How did Long Joe lose his hand and get a hook?
How did Long Joe start walking on a peg leg?

Ahoy there, ye scallywags! Heave ho, fer today we be singin' praises to a true arr, matey, Cap'n B! The scurviest penguin gentleman o' fortune to ever brave the seven seas. Aye, he may 'ave looked like an arctic beast, but a cold sea dog he were nah. Farrr from it! His heart blazed wit' feisty fire 'n his pirate grin be meltin' many a frosty soul.

Though he be sailin' beyond, his spirit be as fierce as a gale blowin' through the riggin, 'n his laughter echoes like the call o' the sea. He taught us the value o' loyalty, the thrill o' adventure, 'n the joy o' a jolly fish feast. By the kraken, how Cap'n Rummyfangs loved dem fish fries!

So hoist yer tankards high, filled with the finest grog, 'n remember our dearrr matey, Cap'n B! May the gales guide him true, 'n may he find fair waters in the jolly beyond. To our fallen comrade, may his memory shine bright in every tide we brave 'n every bounty we claim!

I can hear Cap'n B a-roarin' : "When the seas be rough 'n the sails be shifty, jus' grab yer grog 'n keep yer spirits nifty!"

Fair winds, arr, mateys!

--------------------------------------------
"Roll Dem Rumballs... err, Bones!" ;)

Edit: I be meanin' to roar In fer Best Pirateer. Arrr! Me apologies! 'Twas me flunder.

Edit 2: This here missive be to pay me respects to Cap'n B. A new missive be awaitin' fer me participation In fer Best Pirateer... ;)

Nay In!

But good to see Cap'n B lives on :)
In fer Cursed Crew

This is a supplement to the very first part of this long-running saga (I can't believe it's been two years already!) meant to flesh out character's origin.

After leaving his home island in a hurry and absolutely without a plan, Nick eventually ended up stranded in one of the archipelago's seediest corners. Trying hard not to look suspicious (which in a place like that, rather counterintuitively, means trying to look as suspicious as possible) and to mingle with scum of the sea residing there, he got himself hired as a purser in a smuggling operation thanks to his prior experience in a trade business. Being constantly on the move between numerous ports let his peculiar habits pass mostly unnoticed while his job allowed him to spend days below deck without raising questions. And as far as fellow crewmates were concerned, he was just a harmless fruitcake and an object of harmless mockeries (Nicky, ye sly dog, sneakin' out 'gain onto 'nother night 'scapade? Shy, are we? Little did they know, and when occasional odd corpse was discovered, the ship was already too far away for anyone to connect the dots). Couple years later, when the leader of this venture retired, Nick was appointed (and reluctantly accepted) his successor, chiefly on account of being about the sole candidate competent not only in reading and writing but also counting beyond twelve.

Time passed but Nick was incessantly restless. Finally, ever increasing identity crisis led him to seeking help from the, moderately renowned (and not asking too many questions), Spielsdorf & Daughters detective agency. Proprietor of this family enterprise himself - nicknamed the General due to his military background - requested a meeting on that very night.

In the dimly lit corner of the tavern two patrons were sitting at the table in silence. Four empty mugs in front of them, albeit only one of the gents was drinking. Tall, slender man with short, grey hair, trimmed sideburns, bushy eyebrows and prominent, aquiline nose approached the table.

"General," said the sober of the two, "what 'ave ye got?"
"Nicolas, sir," answered the tall man while sitting down. "Good news, I reckon. I sincerely believe you will be pleased with our results." The General produced a folder and tossed it on the tabletop. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we? Thanks to the trusty insider o' mine in the Bank of Carpattia, I've learned that your great-grandmother received once a certain sum of inheritance money, and that, sir, was the key to the whole case. Using the acquired information, exceptionally helpful clerk in the town archives gladly provided documents proving that your great-grandma migrated to Carpattia at the young age of 19. Not even a year's passed when she married great-grandpa Cage. Mayhaps 'twas love, mayhaps there were other motives..." Nick in the meantime was lazily leafing through the papers. "Oh, by the way, a good ol' friend o' mine, member of the genealogical society, secured us a copy of the family tree. Anywho, exact reasons why that great-nanny o' yours decided to travel so far from home an' then settle down so hastily in a place so unlikely are unclear, but, as per usual, I happen to have certain suspicions. See, I came across some rumors 'n' reports as if her maiden name wasn't particularly popular back in the ole country. Downright infamous even, as a matter o' fact. It's probably nothin' but mainly exaggerated gossips 'n' cheap thrills for the commoners, but still, you may want to know. It's quite morbid really..."

But Nick wasn't listening anymore. His bloodline unfolded before him. Great-grandma was there, barely noticeable, only the name without portrait squeezed in near the bottom left corner of the sheet. Nick's eyes were fixed a bit higher and more to the center though, on a picture of a striking, middle-aged woman. Even miserable quality and size of print hasn't been able to obfuscate sharp, distinctive features and unsettlingly piercing eyes. Unmistakable look of a woman who would participate in the Olympics should only war crimes were part of the program. Caption under the miniature said: Countess Mircalla Karnstein.

Suddenly, slurring of Nick's companion - Olaf, the first mate - right next to his ear, brought him back to reality.
"Whaddaitsays, boss? Ye a nobleman now or somethin'? Like ye always wanted? Dem, howddeycallem, gen-try-folk! Pfff! Har har har!
"Wha... Why yes, dimwit! From now on better address me proper."
"Aye, boss! I mean... like what... a baaaa-scuse me-ron or somethin'?"
"Hmm. Close but not quite. Think big, Olaf, this be the beginnin' of an entire new chapter fer me. An' fer ye too, I s'pose. We don't 'ave t'be modest, fer Pete's sake."
"Aye. What then... a douche?"
"A douche?"
"Seen me a real douchess once. In the city. Sure as 'ell she were far from modest."
